A Busy Summer at the Littlestown Library

By Keith L Greenawalt, Littlestown Librarian

Summer is here and so is a busy time for the Littlestown Library. Why you ask? It’s time again for the 2008 Summer Reading Program in the Adams County Library System. The Littlestown Library is proud be a part of this program which has become a tradition for many youngsters. This year’s theme is “Catch The Reading Bug” and reflects all things creepy and crawly. The program allows children to earn prizes, including the ever popular McDonald’s sundaes and Harrisburg Senators and Frederick Keys baseball tickets, simply by reading! Registration for the program has already started, but it isn’t too late. We are also having an Adult Summer Reading Challenge that enables adults to earn entries into a prize drawing simply by reading!

Another part of Summer Reading is the family friendly programs we offer. This year’s special events are based around the “Reading Bug” theme. As in previous years, our programs while take place on Wednesday mornings at 11:30 AM. These programs include a visit from Master Gardener Marann Jones on June 25; a showing of “Grimes Fairy Tales” by Oh! A Puppet Show on July 2; a program for preschoolers on July 9 with former Littlestown Librarian Virginia Green based on the book Up, Down, and Around by Katherine Ayres; and Creepy Crawlies with Laura Goss on July 16; Craft and Game Day on July 23; and finally Family Bingo on July 30.

This year we are also having some programs on Monday nights at 6:30 PM. These include a series of family movies taking place on June 30 and July 14 and 21. We are also featuring a series of children’s book discussions, including Frindle by Andrew Clements on July 7 and Among The Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix on July 28. All summer programs are free and all those listed above do no require registration.

The Library is also pleased to announce its 2nd Annual Board Game Tournament, to be played at 1 PM on July 19. This year we will be playing the property trading game Monopoly! Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers! This event is free, but does require advanced registration by 8 PM on July 17 for those wishing to play in the tournament. This is the only summer event that requires registration. For more information on any programs visit our website at http://www.adamslibrary.org/littlestown, our blog at http://littlestown library.blogspot.com or call the Library at 717-359-0446.

The Littlestown Library is located next to Alpha Fire Company at 46 E. King St in Littlestown. It is open from 2-8 PM on Mondays and Thursdays, 11 AM-5 PM on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and from 10 AM-4 PM on Saturdays. We are looking forward to an exciting summer and hope you Catch The Reading Bug at the Littlestown Library!
