Holiday Closings

The Littlestown Library will be closed on the following days this holiday season:

Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, Nov. 26th
Christmas Eve Day - Thursday, Dec. 24th

We will also be closing at 5 PM on New Year's Eve - Thursday, Dec. 31st

Note that Christmas Day and New Year's Day are both Friday this year. We are normal closed on Fridays.

Free Computer Class - 11/24/09

Union Township votes at the municipal building at 255 Pine Grove Rd and Germany Township votes at the Eagles Park at 427 Mengus Mill Rd. Polls are open from 7 am to 8 PM

The Littlestown Library was represented at the Stuffed Animal Sleepover at the Harbaugh~Thomas Library in Biglerville by Clark, Mr. Keith's pet bookworm! Clark was joined by his friends from across Adams County. Adams County libraries were represented by Clark, Page from the Fairfield Library, Dewey from the Arendtsville Library, Professor READIT from the New Oxford Library, Dewey from the Children's Library at the Gettysburg Library, and gracious host Booker from the Harbaugh~Thomas Library. Littlestown Historical Resources

The Littlestown Library staff get the occasional inquiry about local history. We get requests for obituaries or other newspaper clippings, house histories, or other general local historical information. Unfortunately we do not have these resources on site at the Library in Littlestown. We do have copies of the 1765/1965: bicentennial, Littlestown, Pa and more recent
A History of Adams County, Pennsylvania, 1700-1990 by Robert L. Bloom on our shelves. For more in-depth resources usually recommend the following places::

The Adams County Library System, Gettysburg - The Littlestown Library is a branch of the Adams County Library System, which is headquartered at 140 Baltimore St in Gettysburg. The System maintains a collection of local history titles as part of the reference collection (these can be searched in our catalog at http://www.youseemore.com/adams/default.asp). These titles must be used in the Library.

The System also maintains, in partnership with the Adams County Historical Society, an obituary index for Adams County. It can be accessed here: http://www.adamslibrary.org/DeathIndex/

The Adams County Library System has an active subscription to Heritage Quest that can be used in the Library or accessed from home. It can be found here: http://persi.heritagequestonline.com/hqoweb/library/do/login/barcode?aid=2076. Note you must have an Adams County Library card to access this.

The Littlestown Area Historical Society - They are a fairly new organization founded in 2007, but they have a great website (http://www.littlestownpa.info/LAHSociety/). Their collection includes most Littlestown High School yearbooks dating back to 1925 and many other items related to Littlestown schools. They also have information and items on the Littlestown Bicentennial of 1965. They share display space at the Littlestown Welcome Center (1A South Queen St, Littlestown) with the Chamber of Commerce.

The Adams County Historical Society - They are located on the campus of The Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg. They maintain a website (http://www.achs-pa.org/) that lists all of their holdings and services. For searches of historical newspapers and records, this is an excellent place to start.

Miss Wilma with Pink Hair!

Earlier today Miss Wilma Krepps, the New Oxford Area Librarian, paid a visit to the Littlestown Library! She came down in her pink wig as a result of coming out on the short end of the 2009 Summer Reading Challenge against Littlestown and its Librarian Mr. Keith. Miss Wilma called Littlestown patrons to tell them their requested books came in, shelved some books, and even did storytime! Congratulations to all Summer Readers from both New Oxford and Littlestown. It was a great competition we hope to repeat next year!

Ever wonder what the Littlestown Library looks like and what it offers? We are a full service branch of the Adams County Library System. We have been serving the Littlestown community since 1997!

Here's a photo tour:

The outside of the Littlestown Library, located at 3 W King St!

We are a located just off of the town square!

We have 2 large display windows...

...where we keep patrons up to date.

We also have an outside book drop for after hours returns.

First thing you see when you walk in the door in the circulation desk. Its on the right side of the library. This is where you go if you need any help!

To the left of door we have our new book display. They can be checked out!

We have a couple of chairs to sit and relax in.

We have a printer and...

...a photocopier and fax machine for patron use.

We have 3 Public Access Computer for Internet access, word processing, etc. and a computer dedicated solely to our catalog. We are also a wireless hotspot.

Above our computers we have a lovely afghan featuring the historic buildings of Littlestown.

We have a work table in the Library.

Moving toward the book shelves we first come to our large print and audio book collections. These are next to the circulation desk.

Looking back into the main shelving area, you'll notice the front section is divided into 3 aisles.

The aisle on the left is where we have our fiction collection.

In the middle aisle, we have young adult materials, non-fiction and biography, children's audio/visual materials (including books on CD, music CDs, and DVDs)
and Read and Return paperbacks.

In the right aisle we have our older magazines, as well as music CDs.

On the wall in the left aisle we have our DVD collection.

We keep our newspapers and newer magazines on racks in the front of the main shelving area.

Our childrens section is in the rear of the main shelving area.
Here we have both easy and juvenile fiction and non-fiction items.

At the rear of the Library we have our programming room!
We hold special events and storytimes here.

This is our bright and colorful storytime rug. It is very comfy!

Summer Reading - The Thank Yous

Summer Reading 2009 at the Littlestown Library has been one of the best we've ever had! There are a lot of people who volunteered their time and talents to help promote literacy and enrich the lives of children in the Littlestown community.

With that in mind, I would personally like to thank all of those who participated in the 2009 Summer Reading Program, particularly to ACLS's Assistant Director Laura Goss and Communtiy Relations Librarian Virginia Green for doing excellent storytimes, to Kami Nicholson for her knowledge of Spectacular Science, Robyn Jacobs and her artistic "Art" Day, to Emily Fitez for providing musical accompaniment to drown me out during Sing Along Storytime, and to Pam Wisor for pulling together another great Craft Day. Also thanks to Marcus Dowling and Dani Myers for providing logistical support during these programs!

Thank you to Wilma Krepps, my counterpart at the New Oxford Area Library, for being my friendly rival during the Summer Reading Challenge. Thanks to all of the readers here at the Littlestown Library who helped me avoid the dress! Hopefully we have started a tradition here at the Littlestown Library.

I would also like to thank all of the teachers who participated in the Summer Reading Storytime programs on Tuesday nights at Rolling Acres. A particular thanks is due to Betsy Bein for pulling it all together. Summer Reading continues to roll along her at the Littlestown Library...here is what is going on:

1) There are only 2 weeks left in Summer Reading...and yes you can still sign up (visit www.adamslibrary.org)

2) If you haven't been to Tuesday Night Storytime at Rolling Acres you are missing a great time! The program runs Tuesdays through August 4th. The bookmobile visits from 6-7pm and then the program starts at 7pm. There's only 2 left...find out what you are missing...these REALLY are great programs!

3) Musical Storytime with Miss Laura will be Wednesday @ 11:30 AM. This is the final "Be Creative" Summer Reading program of the year! Registration is required!

4) and finally...the Littlestown Library still continues to build a lead over the New Oxford Area Library in the Summer Reading Challenge. Littlestown now leads 98,310 minutes to 39,269 minutes! Let's finish strong and show ALL of Adams County how the Littlestown Library does Summer Reading!

Summer reading is humming along nicely at the Littlestown Library! A few things to note:

Readers Theater scheduled for 7/1 has been canceled. There will be Teddy Bear Storytime with Mr Keith in its place, also on 7/1 @ 11:30 AM!

Remember that Summer Storytimes At Rolling Acres Elementary School will continue to Tuesday nights from until August 4th. The Bookmobile is there from 6-7 PM and the program starts at 7 PM. The previous two events have been a lot of fun for all!

Summer Fun at the Littlestown Library

Hello from the Littlestown Library! Perhaps I should rephrase that: Hello from the Littlestown Library at its new home at 3 W King St in Littlestown. That’s right, we moved! Our hours and our phone number are the same, but we are now located just off of the square in Littlestown!

One of the most frequently asked questions I get regarding the move is “do you like your new home?” The answer, from this librarian’s seat, is a resounding and emphatic “YES!” Never under estimate the importance of windows in ones workplace. The old library space did not have windows, but the new one has two giant storefront display windows looking out onto King St. I can now see out onto the world and its happenings and hopefully you can see back into the world of the Littlestown Library. I hope you can see our Internet accessible computers, magazines, DVDs, CDs, books on CD, and of course books. We may have moved, but we are the same great library that has been serving the Littlestown community since 1997!

In other news, we are gearing up for our Summer Reading Program that is taking place at all of the branches of the Adams County Library System. Registration for the Summer Reading Program has entered the digital age and is being done entirely online now. Visit www.adamslibrary.org and follow the link to register and record your minutes for this year’s “Be Creative” Summer Reading Program! If you do not have Internet access from home this may be done at any branch of the Adams County Library System. Children registering for the Littlestown Library who read their 2 hours per week will be entered into a weekly prize drawing to for a t-shirt! Children finishing all 8 weeks of the program will have their name put in the front of a book and receive a certificate!

We are also doing a series of events at the Library as part of the “Be Creative” theme. Our programs cover all of the bases of art, music, and acting! Remaining programs are Wednesdays from June 24^th through July 29^th at 11:30 AM. These programs will require registration due to space constraints and will be limited to about 15 children per program. You may register for each program beginning one week in advance of that program and may register either in person or by calling the Library at 717 359 0446. There is one more caveat to our 2009 Summer Reading Program! We are having a friendly competition with the New Oxford Area Library to see which can accrue the most minutes read during the Program. If New Oxford wins, I will end up wearing a dress! If Littlestown wins, Miss Wilma, the New Oxford librarian, will have to wear a pink wig! So have a safe and happy summer and keep on reading with the Littlestown Library!

To that end, a group of concern citizens, spearheaded by the Littlestown Women's Club, has come together to form the Friends of the Littlestown Library. As of 3PM on June 17th, the score of the Littlestown Library-New Oxford Area Library Summer Reading Challenge is 7871 minutes to 6664 minutes in favor of New Oxford.

Congratulations to Danielle M for winning the Week 1 Prize Drawing. To be eligible for the prize drawing you must log at least 120 minutes read as part of Summer Reading for that week.

The Littlestown Library will be having an Adult Summer Reading Contest!

Summer Reading Isn't Just for Kids!

The Challenge
Its a simple program! Sign up at the Littlestown Library and receive a packet containing entry cards. Read a book and fill out the information on the entry card! Each book you read and entry blank you fill out earns you an entry into a drawing for 2 gift cards to a local supermarket (1st prize is a $20 gift card and 2nd prize is a $10 gift card)!You can read up to 8 books and get 8 entries into the drawing! Registrations and Entry cards will be accepted between June 15th and August 9th. Books must be at least 100 pages...

The Fine Print (yes even the Library has fine print)
1) You cannot win both gift cards
2) You must register in person at the Littlestown Library
3) The Adult Summer Reading Challenge is open to those 16 and older
4) Entry blanks must be handed in in person during normal business hours at the Littlestown Library only. Entries handed in at other Adams Co.Library System locations will not be accepted
5) Library staff will not be responsible for entry cards placed inside of books or in the Outside Book Drop. If you want to make sure we receive them, hand them to a staff member!
6) Name will be drawn by Library Staff after August 9thd and winners will be notified by phone
7) Decisions of Library manager are final

The New Oxford Area Library - Littlestown Library Summer Reading Challenge

The New Oxford-Littlestown Summer Reading Challenge.

It all came about because Adams County Library System branch managers Keith Greenawalt and Wilma Krepps went to a workshop and started talking. That’s how it started. Both were looking for a unique way to challenge their young patrons to excel during the Adams County Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program. Out of that conversation came the New Oxford Area Library-Littlestown Library Summer Reading Challenge!

Mr. Keith, the branch manager at the Littlestown Library, has challenged Miss Wilma, his counterpart at the New Oxford Area Library, to out read his patrons during the Summer of 2009. It’s not uncommon for people to make silly challenges or bets like this. It almost seems every Super Bowl or World Series bring a bet between governors or mayors! Why not have a friendly wager during Summer Reading?

“I think it’s just a neat twist on an old idea,” says Mr. Keith about the Challenge, “I really just want to encourage kids all over Adams County to sign up for our summer reading program!”

The premise is simple: whomever’s library patrons read more total minutes as part of the Summer Reading Program will be declared the winner. The fate that befalls the loser? They will have to do something silly at the winner’s library sometime at the end of the summer. If Littlestown wins, Miss Wilma will end up with purple or pink hair! If New Oxford wins Mr. Keith will end up wearing a dress! But as long as kids are reading, we all win!

"I can look silly if the kids read and enjoy their summer,” Miss Wilma says, “Purple and turquoise hair! Oh well it's just for the day. But I think Mr. Keith better think about his attire."

The Littlestown Library will be hosting a teen movie evening at the Library on May 4th @ 6 PM. We will be watching a film featuring magical bedtime stories. Snacks will be provided.

The Library will also be offering a computer class on Introduction the Internet on the evening of May 5th @ 6 PM. We will also be offering a computer class on Searching the Internet on June 9th @ 6 PM. Separate registration is required for each of these classes.

How Many Boxes Contest Results!

We have a winner from the Library's "How Many Boxes Contest"! Ten year old Miranda B. guessed 65 boxes and was the closest without going over! The number of boxes that it took to move the Library was 77. That was a lot of unpacking for the ACLS staff and volunteers that came down here and worked hard to get the library into the shape that it is in today...! Thanks to all who participated!

Computer Classes for 2009

The Littlestown Library will begin its 2009 season of FREE computer classes beginning on April 7th @ 6 PM. We will be offering Introduction to Windows XP that day. Advanced registration is required as space for this class is limited to 8. Call 717 359 0446 to register.

We are also going to be offering Introduction to the Internet on May 5th @ 6 PM. Registration is also required for this class.

Computer classes this year will be the first Tuesday of the month at 6 PM at the Library (3 W King St)...

How Many Boxes Contest!

We're celebrating our move to the new Littlestown Library at 3 W King St by having a contest! Moving was a lot of work: taking the books off of the shelves, packing the books, moving the books and furniture, unpacking the books, reshelving the books...but now that we are in our new space and all set up, we can celebrate!

Here's how the contest works...guess how many boxes (13 inches by 13.25 inches by 16 inches) it took to move books, movies, and CDs to the new library? We're not counting office supplies or furniture, just the stuff you can check out! Whoever guesses closest (without going over) by the close of the contest at the end of the day March 26th will win a prize pack of books (if there is a tie we will do a drawing of those tied to determine the winner). There are 3 ways to enter…either email your guess (and include your name, age, and phone number) to Littlestown@adamslibrary.org, call 717 359 0446 with your guess, or stop by and tell the staff your guess…this contest is open to children 13 and under and only one guess per person please! If you win you must claim your prize at the Library in person (or as a parent in person)…If you have questions you can call us at 717 359 0446...

The Littlestown Express

The Littlestown Express has pulled into the station at the Littlestown Library. We have been graced with a new decoration, on loan from one of our volunteers. Its a O scale model of a General Motors Electro Motive Division E-8 engine in Pennsylvania Railroad Brunswick Green livery pulling two mid-20th century passanger cars and a mid-20th century Railway Express Agency freight car. The engine is made by Weaver Co. Models and the cars are made by Williams Company. Thanks Mr Kurt for adding some decoration to our new home at 3 W King!

The Littlestown Library continues its move to the new location at 3 W King St! On Monday all of the furniture and books were moved in...! We are in the process of unpacking and will be ready to open on Monday, Feb. 9th at 2 PM!

The new library is starting to take shape. Nothing has be moved in yet (that's Monday), but the new library has been painted and new carpet has been installed (just today!). We would like to thank the borough of Littlestown and their maintence staff for all of the work they did in painting the new space! It looks really really good! Remember to come and see for yourself when we officially reopen for business at 3 West King St. on Monday, Febuary 9th, 2009 at 2 PM.

The Move Has Begun!

The packing has started! The Littlestown Library is now closed as we are in the process of moving. Library system staff has packed and boxed up all of the books! We will reopening at the new location at 3 W King Street on Feb. 9th at 2 PM!

Today (Tuesday Jan 27th, 2009) is the final day the Littlestown Library will be open at the Community Center before we move to our new location at 3 West King St. We will open there on Feb. 9th, 2009!!! The staff of Littlestown Library is VERY excited to be moving to a new home, but at the same time we are sad to be leaving our home of the past 11 years.

The Library will be moving to 3 West King Street, about 2 blocks away from our current location!

The Library will close at the Community Center location, our home for the past 11 years, at the end of the day on Tuesday, January 27th and reopen at our new location on Monday, February 9th @ 2 PM!!

The Littlestown Library will be showing a family movie on December 29 @ 6:15 PM. We will be watching a recent movie about a robot. This movie is rated G.

The library also recently got in a selection of audiobooks...both on tape and CD...as a rotation this week.

As a reminder, the Littlestown Library will be closed on Thursday, November 27. We will reopen during our normal Saturday hours on November 29 @ 10 AM.

Littlestown Library – The Cabin Fever Cure!

As the weather outside turns colder and summer continues to fade into a memory, do you find yourself looking for something to do? Do you want to prevent cabin fever before it comes? Well, how about something from the Littlestown Library to chase away the cold weather blues! The Littlestown Library has a selection of DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, and of course good old fashion books to help keep you busy! If you don’t know what you want, Mr. Keith (that’s me) or Mr. Steve would be more then happy to assist you in preventing cold weather boredom!

Not only does the Library have some really cool stuff, we also have programs to keep your sanity intact! For the younger set, we have our weekly storytime with Miss Rose every Wednesday at 11:30 AM. For those teens to cool for storytime, we have our monthly teen movie. In November it will take place on 1 PM on Saturday, Nov 22^nd. Snacks are provided to assuage your hunger pangs. For adults we have our monthly adult book discussion group that meets (generally) on the third Friday of the month at 11:00 AM. On November 21, the group will be discussing Red Scarf Girl by Ji-Li Liang. Liang writes a memoir of growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution. For more information on any of these programs, cal the Library at 359 0446. The Library, and all of ACLS, will also be a host site for the Great American Health Check on November 13 from 2:30 PM to 7:30 PM. For more information on this event please call the local chapter of the American Cancer Society at 334-0697.
